Sebaceous glands attach to the hair follicles under our scalp and release sebum onto the hair shaft, creating a natural oil protective coat that repels water and prevents hair from drying out.
Thus, although these oils are a good, natural thing, your sebaceous glands can produce excess sebum, and as a result your hair can become greasier.
An overly greasy scalp can cause itching and seborrheic dermatitis to become uncomfortable. It can even provide a dandruff-causing feast for the fungus. That said, you don’t want your entire oil to be stripped. Your natural hair protection oils are vital to a healthy scalp and lustrous hair. Here’s how to cut the grease without harming your hair or scalp irritation.
Home Remedies for Greasy Hair
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is a remedy for both dry frizzy hair and greasy hair as it works by balancing the pH of your hair and scalp! The sebaceous glands will automatically work well when the pH level is controlled and will not produce excessive oil. Vinegar also clears your dirt from your scalp and hair and other oily build-ups. In addition, apple cider vinegar’s nutritious composition gives you soft, shiny hair! So how do you use apple cider vinegar to stop greasy hair?
Take the water and add the vinegar. Mix well with each other. Now wash your hair with shampoo and water as you do daily. Use the prepared vinegar-water solution to rinse your hair once again after you rinse your hair well. Let it sit for a couple of minutes. Now wash it with cool water again. Repeat two to three times a week.
Condition The Hair, Not The Scalp
Never apply conditioner to your scalp, as this will only increase the buildup of your product, which in turn will make your hair oily. The conditioner is for the hair, and the shampoo is for the scalp.
Eat a Balanced Diet
Studies suggest that our sebaceous glands can be affected by the food we eat and how much is excreted. In fact, more dietary fat or carbohydrates can increase sebum production from the sebaceous glands. On the other hand, it has been shown that the caloric restriction dramatically reduces the rate of sebum secretion.
Choosing the right fats, healthy fats such as ghee and coconut oil and carbs are likely to help the oil-producing sebaceous glands reach a more positive balance. Studies have shown that increasing the intake of omega-3 fatty acids is also great for your hair through a diet rich in fish and seafood.
Lemon Juice for Greasy Hair
The citric acid in lemon juice helps to remove the oily accumulation that may be present in your hair due to the residue of hair care products. Lemon juice, like vinegar, also helps balance the hair’s pH level to minimize its greasiness. Lemon juice’s astringent properties also help balance the natural oil production, the sebum, into your scalp.
Add the freshly squeezed lemon juice to the water. Wash the hair with water and shampoo. Use the water and lemon juice mix as the final rinse. After pouring the lemon water onto the scalp and the length of your hair, gently massage your scalp. Let it sit for a few minutes. Now wash off with water, warm water if necessary.
Blow Dry Your Hair
You don’t want to over-dry your hair, but if you want to get rid of greasy hair, blow drying may be helpful. Blow drying the hair helps remove oil as heat absorbs oils from the scalp. Make sure you use the lowest possible heat setting to avoid heat damage if you choose to blow dry. This also applies to other heated hair products such as flat irons and curling irons.
Egg Yolk Hair Mask
Egg yolks have a high content of sulfur that can help ease the symptoms of dandruff and greasy hair. Egg yolks also contain lecithin and protein, which can help reinforce your hair while giving it a softer, brighter look.
Simply beat the egg yolks or blend them with honey, tea tree oil or olive oil, add to dry hair, leaving for around 5 to 20 minutes. Then thoroughly wash your hair and rinse well.
