In the 1960’s, Tiramisu (pronounced “tih-ruh-mee-SOO”) was invented at the restaurant El Touga in Treviso, Italy. Literally, Tiramisu means “pick me up” or “take me up,” which likely refers to the jolt you get when you eat laced ladyfingers with espresso. Actually Tiramisu is Italian famous coffee-flavoured dessert that everyone wants it.

It’s often referred to as a ‘Italian Trifle’ because it has layers like any trifle. In this case, ladyfingers (cookies that looks like finger-shaped) are covered with a custard mixed with mascarpone cheese. The top of the Tiramisu can be garnished with cocoa powder and/or shaved chocolate dusting, and fresh raspberries slices.

Making the Tiramisu the day before serving is a smart idea, so that all the flavors have time to soften and blend and it has become firm enough to slice quickly. If you want a more solid Tiramisu, put it in the freezer before serving for an hour or two.

Ingredients

  • 16 Ladyfingers
  • 2 Large egg yolks
  • 250g (8.8oz) Mascarpone cheese
  • 60g (2 oz) Granulated sugar
  • 200ml (6.7 oz) Whipping cream
  • 200ml (6.7 oz) Brewed coffee, Rum or Amaretto
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder for dusting

Instructions

  • Start by combining the egg yolks and half of the sugar in a large bowl.
  • Using an electric hand mixer, beat for about five minutes.
  • Add the mascarpone cheese and continue to beat until well combined.
  • In a separate large bowl, beat the whipping cream until creamy and soft.
  • Then add the remaining sugar and continue beating until thick and stiff.
  • Gently insert the whipped cream in the mixture of mascarpone.
  • Stir the rum or amaretto into the brewed coffee.
  • Dip the ladyfingers into the coffee mixture and then arrange on a plate, then pipe dots of mascarpone cream on top of each ladyfinger.
  • Repeat with another layer of dipped ladyfingers and mascarpone cream.
  • Dust with cocoa powder, refrigerate for at least 3 hours and the tiramisu is ready to eat.

IS IT DIFFICULT TO MAKE TIRAMISU?

Is it possible to FREEZE TIRAMISU?

Yes, you can freeze the tiramisu cake. This tiramisu cake can be made a day or two ahead of time and should last for up to one week in your refrigerator. Using plastic wrap and put it directly against the surface to avoid the forming of a skin, cover it tightly.

Repeat the process with an extra layer of plastic wrap, then cover and freeze with tin foil. To defrost let it stay for 15-20 minutes at room temperature.

How long you can keep the tiramisu in refrigerator?
