Tuna Empanadas

Tuna Empanadas – These home-made Heart-Shaped empanadas are great for Christmas or every other special day! Make the best empanadas filled with tuna, red bell pepper, onion, tomato sauce, by following our recipe below.

Ingredients for 8 Tuna empanadas

– 16 empanada dough discs
– 1 red bell pepper, chopped
– 1 medium onion, chopped
– 100 g (3.5 oz) of canned tuna in oil, drained
– 225 g (8 oz) of tomato sauce
– 1 egg, beaten, for brushing
– Olive oil

Let’s get started

  • Start by heating olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  • When hot, add the onion and red bell pepper and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  • Add the tuna and tomato sauce and continue to cook, stirring often, for a few minutes.
  • Then remove from the heat and cool a little
  • Place three teaspoons of filling in the center of a dough disc and shape the filling into a heart shape.
  • Then cover with a second dough disc and press around the filling.
  • Using a paring knife, cut the dough into a heart shape around the filling.
  • Seal the edges with the tip of a fork
  • Transfer the empanadas to a baking sheet lined with baking paper and brush with beaten egg
  • Using a toothpick, poke holes on top of each empanada
  • Bake in a preheated oven at 180c (350f) for about 10 minutes, or until golden brown
  • Remove from the oven, let cool a bit, and serve warm or cold!
